The Half Truth We Tell Ourselves: Why “It Is What It Is” Falls Short

We have all heard it. We have all probably said it. That heavy, dismissive sigh followed by five little words: “Well, it is what it is.”

I remember a moment when that phrase echoed loudly in my own life. I was looking at my father as he complained about a lingering physical problem. I remember sending him an urging, desperate message, pleading with him to go get checked out by a doctor. Mostly, I just wanted him to be okay. I wanted us to discover what else could be done to help him.

But my father was a man who leaned heavily on faith. He had constructed deep belief systems that had served him incredibly well in many seasons of his life. Yet, sometimes, those same belief systems became walls. They limited what he was willing to see and what he was willing to do. He accepted the situation as a fixed reality.

When faced with an intimidating obstacle, it is so tempting to just shrug our shoulders. But here is the emotional reality: accepting that phrase is a surrender.

There is a massive difference between acknowledging reality and resigning yourself to it. Yes, there are moments in life when we cannot change our circumstances directly. If the sky breaks open and it rains today, no amount of willpower will stop the storm. But what God gives us is the profound ability to adjust. He grants us the freedom to choose. We get to choose whether we stand freezing in the downpour, or whether we seek shelter. We choose whether we stay, or whether we go.

The Lens of Our Language

This is where the power of our words comes into play. Words are not just sounds. They are the very lens through which we view our reality. If your lens is smeared with passive phrases like “it is what it is,” your vision of the future will be entirely limited by what is right in front of you. You will only see the walls.

But the right words? The right words are like rays of dawn breaking through a dense, dark forest. They illuminate a new path. They stretch our imagination, giving us the sudden confidence and the raw, electric energy to keep moving forward. They allow us to grow, to pivot, and to contribute to the world in ways we previously never would have been able to do.

We cannot always control the landscape of our lives, but we hold absolute power over the map we use to navigate it. Are you using a map that tells you to stop, or one that shows you the way through?

If you are ready to swap out that old, limiting lens for one of hope and action, this is exactly what we dive into in Change Your Words, Change Your World: Transformation. It is time to stop surrendering to your circumstances and start speaking your possibilities into existence.
